History & Achievements
From Grief to Action was officially constituted as a society in December of 2000. However this group of dedicated family members had been working to raise awareness and lobby for change for at least a year before their incorporation.
The following is a summary of awards presented to some of the committed volunteers of From Grief to Action; honouring their experiences and tireless efforts to improve the opportunities for recovery for both drug users and their families, despite the vagaries of lives lived with family members involved in drug addiction.
- Our Vice President, Susie Ruttan, was nominated for a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award, Spring 2002, and given a Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal for her work with FGTA in January, 2003
- Our Former President, Nichola Hall, was given a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in June of 2003
- Nijole Kuzmickas, Director of the documentary "From Grief to Action" was given a Golden Sheaf Award
Our Support Group
"Parents Forever" (led by Frances Kenny) meets every other Friday at St. Mary's Church, Kerrisdale, providing support for parents dealing with the day-to-day challenges of having family members who are dependent on drugs. See our website for dates of upcoming meetings. Parents Forever recently celebrated its 5th Anniversary.
The Coping Kit
The Coping Kit was released May 2003, expect our revised version to be launch in early 2006. The Coping Kit, which is the result of FGTA's ongoing efforts to provide support for families and friends of drug users. This Kit contains tips for identifying signs of drug use, strategies for meeting day-to-day challenges and answers to a variety of questions about drugs and addiction. It also includes contact numbers for further information and resources.

Film
The documentary From Grief To Action chronicles the lives of four families over 17 months whose children are addicted to hard drugs. It is the courageous story of parents who are struggling to keep their children alive and in treatment, while at the same time working to change public drug policies. Originally broadcast on CBC Newsworld's "The Passionate Eye", it was produced and directed by Nijole Kuzmickas, a founding member of the association.
